SANA'S ARTIST STATEMENT

"I'm concerned with building a tone that is essentially if you were a kid at a fun party with all your friends and you're eating some junk food after just spending the day playing outside and you run to a table to grab a drink and you take a sip and the drink you get is bitter la croix and you're  looking around and everyone else seems fine with it and you're like... I guess this is okay??? Subverting serious emotions by injecting humor in them has become not only how I process emotion, but how I continue to relay those emotions to others."

LMAO SHIT

"You know when things go wrong, so wrong that all that can come out of your mouth is 'lmao shit.' This quilt is about making my own protection, and continuing forward in the shitstorm."

"This quilt, however,  has many more functions than providing me warmth. It can be a blanket I sit on to enjoy my day, a blanket I put on top of my comforter to keep me warm on extra cold nights, and a friendly reminder that everything will be alright."

PINK FORM

"I was working with curved wood and realized a little doodle that often scatters the sides of my notes."

"I quickly realized, though, that it kind of felt cold. It needed something. So obviously, I knit a sweater for it."

BE WITH YOU

"'Be With You' is a kind of detournement of Enrique Iglesias' 90s hit song. I use video to contrast the song’s tone to transform it into something more resonant. The video includes dancing and lip syncing, but there is an underlying tension between the lyrics of the song and the quiet moments in the video.

"The video is recorded through a laptop camera in order to create a space that’s more personal and intimate. Both pieces 'Be With You' and 'LMAO SHIT' are about dealing with grief, but also have an easy access point which allows viewers into the work and then leaves them somewhat unsure how to respond."
